When and where does the  session meet?
We meet on Sunday nights from 7:30 - 9:00.  Our warm-ups start at 6:30.
We meet at the Rinks in Shelton, CT

How  good  a  skater do I have to be to start speedskating?
To get started you need to be able to skate on figure skates or hockey
skates well enough to get around the rink.  You do not need to be a good
skater but you should not be a total beginner.

How many levels of skater can be included in the same session?
We have A, B and C skaters all on the ice at one time.  That includes
skaters that are beginners all the way to nationally ranked champions.  The
practice sessions are organized to accommodate all levels and we have
three coaches so each group gets individual attention.

What equipment do I need to get started?
You need a helmut, gloves, skates (do not have to be speedskates) , elbow
and knee pads (can be the type used for in line or hockey) and a
neckguard.

How do I get speedskates?
We have a club rental program with a limited number of skates.  If we have
the right  size for you we will rent them to you for $50.00 for the season/
$25 for half a season.

If you want to buy skates we will help you determine which kind would be
most appropriate for you depending on your skill level.  You can buy used
skates from club members and on the internet or work with a vendor.  See
our links page for recommended vendors.

Where can I get a skin suit?

The Fairfield County Club tight suit is made by Shoei Designs in Ontario,
Canada. Each suit is made to order  - prices vary.  Contact Shoei Designs

How much does skating cost?
A full season of skating with the Fairfield County Club is $549.00. That
payment goes directly to the Rinks at Shelton and pays for our ice.  Walk
on fees are $25 per session unless you belong to another club and then
the cost is $18.   Individuals are limited to three walk ons per season at
which time we require that you pay the cost for the remainder of the season
.

We also require that skaters be members of the Fairfield County
Speedskating Club and the Connecticut Speedskating  Association.

The dues are $65 of which $15 is forwarded to CSA (
Ctspeedskating.org).
Club dues go toward any expenses the club may have such as the
purchase and maintenance of  safety equipment and special training
programs we may have throughout the year.  Remember, our club is run
entirely by volunteers, including our coaches, and our funds are extremely
limited.

CSA fees go toward supporting the regional association.  The CSA
represents our club and state at the national level at US Speedskating
(USS) meetings and pays annual dues to US Speedskating so our skaters
can skate in sanctioned meets.    We are also on the USS web site and are
allowed to host sanctioned meets.

What is US Speedskating and do I need to belong?
U.S. Speedskating is the national governing body for the sport of
speedskating. The organization is  responsible for developing skaters  all
the way up the pipeline of development - from the grassroots up to the elite
level and beyond to masters. USS organizes the meet schedules around
the country,  manages the US Olympic program and recruits corporate
sponsors for the sport.  The organization also provides all members with
secondary liability insurance for skating accidents.
USS, our club and CSA
require that all skaters belonging to  member clubs and
associations be members of USS.  The cost is $30 and the
application can be done on line at:
http://speedskating.org/.
